Saint Mary's County Real Estate
The Patuxent River is on the eastern side of St. Mary's County. Golden Beach is on the Patuxent River in the northern part of the county. Golden Beach is less than 50 miles from Washington, D.C.
The Potomac River is on the western side of St. Mary's County. Piney Point is on the Potomac River near the southern tip of the county. Many people from Washington, D.C. spent their summers in Piney Point during the 19th century. The Piney Point Lighthouse was built in the 1830s.
Mechanicsville is in the northern part of the county. It is four miles from a commuter bus stop in the town of Charlotte Hall. The bus ride from Charlotte Hall to Washington takes about an hour and a half. Most of the St. Mary's homes for sale in Mechanicsville and Charlotte Hall have between two and five bedrooms.
St. Mary's City is near the southern tip of the St. Mary's County peninsula. The first town in this area was founded in 1634. The town was later abandoned. Excavations in the 20th century uncovered the site of the town. A museum, Historic St. Mary's City, stands on the original site of St. Mary's City. Museum exhibits focus on the lives of the town's early settlers. Historic buildings have been recreated at the museum. People who buy St. Mary's County homes for sale here will find themselves near historic sites.
